
Getting Your UV Lines Sharp: The Truth About Gallium Iodide Lamps
In PCB fabrication, you know the frustration of a blurred circuit. It’s the difference between a perfect board and a scrap pile. Most of the time, that comes down to one thing: the light coming out of your UV source. We lean heavily on Gallium Iodide (GaI) lamps. Why? Because they hit that sweet spot in the UV-C and UV-B range. They pack a punch right where the photoresists need it to cure fast.
The Fight for 0.5%
Our R&D team spent months obsessing over a tiny 0.5% bump in spectral energy concentration. It sounds like a rounding error, but it’s actually a big deal. Here’s the thing: when the spectral peak is tighter, you stop wasting energy on heat (infrared) and start putting more photons exactly where they belong. We pulled this off by tweaking the gallium-to-iodine ratio and dialing in the pressure inside the quartz envelope. The result? The spectrum doesn’t “bleed.” Your photoresist reacts the same way on the edge of the board as it does in the center.
The Hardware Side of Things
We use high-purity fused quartz. If you use cheap glass, it just sucks up the UV before it ever hits the board. These lamps are designed to slide right into your existing UV arrays, but don’t just plug them in and walk away. You need a rock-solid current source. If your power supply is shaky, the lamp will burn out way too soon. Plus, we’ve noticed that when voltage jumps around, the light shifts. If your power supply isn’t tight, that 0.5% gain we worked so hard for just vanishes into noise.
Real-World Talk
More concentrated light means more photons hitting the PCB. That’s great for your throughput, but it’s tough on your gear. You can’t just crank these lamps to the max and hope for the best. You need forced-air cooling or a chilled water jacket. If you don’t keep them cool, the heat will warp the quartz or kill the lamp’s lifespan. It’s that simple.
