Getting Your Textile Curing Right with Gallium Iodide Lamps
If you’ve ever dealt with prints peeling off fabric, you know how frustrating it is. Usually, it’s because the ink didn’t cure all the way through. That’s where our custom gallium iodide (GaI) lamps come in. Standard mercury lamps are fine for some things, but they don’t always cut it for thick ink on porous fabrics. Our GaI tubes push the light into longer wavelengths. In plain English? The UV light actually digs deep into the material instead of just hitting the surface. The science bit (but kept simple) We use high-purity quartz glass because these lamps get hot—really hot. If the glass isn’t top-notch, it’ll crack the moment you start cycling the power. The real magic is in the gallium dopant. It helps the lamp hit that sweet spot in the UV-A and UV-B range. This stops that annoying “surface skinning” problem where the top looks dry, but the bottom is still gooey. Nobody wants a print that looks finished but rubs off in the wash. Managing the heat and speed Here’s the thing about line speed: if you want to run your conveyor faster, you need more punch. That means higher wattage. But be careful with your ballast. If the voltage doesn’t match the lamp, you’re just asking for a premature burnout. And please, check your fans. GaI lamps throw off a ton of heat. If your cooling system can’t keep up, the tube overheats and your UV output just drops off a cliff. Getting them into your line The good news? These are pretty much drop-in replacements for most industrial UV tunnels. We’ll handle the length and the end-cap connectors so they slide right into your existing sockets without a fight. Just make sure they’re straight. If a lamp is even slightly skewed, you’ll get patchy curing across the fabric, and you’ll end up tossing a lot of wasted product. And a quick pro tip: keep an eye on your reflectors. Give them a check every 500 hours. Also, keep those quartz sleeves spotless. It sounds minor, but a thin layer of dust can kill about 10% of your UV power. It’s a five-minute clean that saves you a massive headache later.
